As part of our continued growth, the University of New Mexico’s Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented self-starter for the role of Senior Sponsored Projects Officer (SSPO) to join our team of professionals.

OSP is a core office that provides administration, management, and oversight of the world class extramural sponsored research programs being conducted at our Research One designated university. We provide an exciting, multifaceted, and fast paced work environment that emphasizes customer service, professionalism and growth.

The Senior Sponsored Projects Officer will supervise the work of the OSP staff in the proposal and or award teams, ensuring adherence to internal processes, and compliance with University, State, Federal, and applicable agency requirements. The supervisor will provide direction, leadership, advice and consultation to the OSP staff, UNM faculty and their associated administrators and accountants, and various governmental and non-governmental agencies, which are the source of these awards. Our department’s environment is fast paced; therefore, we are looking for enthusiastic individuals who have solid computer and technical skills, including experience working with integrated financial systems, proposal submission systems, and compliance requirements

As a Senior Sponsored Projects Officer on our team, you will:

· Support faculty and staff with research-related activities to include complex, in-depth negotiations with corporate and federal sponsors, regulatory compliance, budget review, proposal review, and award set up.

· Assist principal investigators, administrators, and accountants in navigating the processes involved in preparing and reviewing incoming and outgoing research awards.

Conduct detailed reviews of time-sensitive documents to guarantee compliance with sponsoring agency requirements, university policies and procedures, and other applicable regulations.

Other duties include, monitoring expired awards to ensure compliance with progress report submission, management of various electronic portals for proposal submission; act as the main point of contact between our customers and the various system vendors; analyze proposal and award data and develop reports involving this data; and develop and present trainings to UNM departments and the UNM research community. This position provides a critical core function with university-wide scope and will be responsible for various internal controls needed to maintain the integrity of UNM's financial system as well as meet the university's institutional regulatory and compliance requirements. The Senior Officer will report to the Manager of Sponsored Projects.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • With the Pre- and/or Post-Award processing of Sponsored Projects funds.
  • Leading, motivating, and mentoring large teams.
  • Establishing effective working relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Working in a Core Financial Services Division of a higher education institution.
  • Working directly with Faculty in a higher education institution.
  • Working with Banner, Cayuse and MyReports.

Degrees and or Certificates:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to independently conduct research on relevant regulations.
  • Ability to work autonomously with a significant degree of organization and interpersonal skills to work efficiently with a wide range of constituents.

Must be US Citizen due to possible Export Control handling.
