Position Summary

The Department of Landscape Architecture in the School of Architecture+ Planning at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision, or Associate Professor with tenure. This is your opportunity to join an award winning faculty in the Land of Enchantment. Applications received on or before January 10, 2019 will have best consideration. The Landscape Architecture program is in the School of Architecture + Planning, along with professional programs in Architecture and Community + Regional Planning. The three academic programs promote interdisciplinary teaching and learning. The School also offers graduate certificates in Historic Preservation + Regionalism and Urban Innovation. Started in 2000, Landscape Architecture is a growing and dynamic professional graduate degree program, fully accredited by the LAAB, and boasting numerous national and international student awards. Areas of focus are design (primarily in the urban environment), cultural landscapes, design in arid environments, urban design, and art + ecology. The School research areas of focus are in arid lands, health and the built environment, indigenous planning and design and digital fabrication.

We are seeking an individual who will promote and demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and outreach activities in the Landscape Architecture program and the School; who can complement and add to the program’s existing strengths and areas of focus; effectively teach and mentor graduate students and help prepare them for their future roles in the LA profession; and be a critical faculty member that fully participates in next phases of growth and development of the LA program.

The successful candidate will have both design and ecology backgrounds, with a focus on urban ecology, and who will have a strong working knowledge of the application of ecological principles in the design of urban environments. They will have strong design skills and innovative design studio teaching methods as well as current knowledge and abilities in digital representation, particularly in design visualization.


* Teach one lecture or seminar course and one studio per semester in the Department of Landscape Architecture

* Advise MLA thesis students

* Maintain research, scholarly and/or creative activity that leads to publication and other significant forms of recognition

* Serve on department, school and university committees


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Master of Landscape Architecture by appointment/or application date

2. Three years university level teaching experience, either full time or part time, including design studios, in Landscape Architecture and/or closely related disciplines

3. Evidence of a research agenda and a record of applied research and/or professional design in the urban environment, with an ecology focus

Preferred Qualifications

1. Record of publishing in the field of landscape and urban ecology

2. Experience and skills in digital scenario modeling

3. Has demonstrated an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research

4. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities

5. Professional experience in Landscape Architecture or closely related field
