CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION IMPROVEMENT MANAGER

 

JOB SUMMARY

Plans, manages and coordinates Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) practices to ensure consistency and to ensure appropriate and effective reimbursement.  Develops policies and procedures to support  the  CDI workflow and guidelines.

 Provides  education and training to the CDI staff , medical providers, coding staff and ancillary staff on effective, compliant clinical documentation.   Facilitates consistent, accurate, optimal documentation by providing both formal and informal educational programs. 

Demonstrates and maintains close working relationships with medical providers, coders, quality, as well as other ancillary departments responsible for clinical documentation. 

Demonstrates knowledge of DRG payer issues for documentation opportunities, clinical documentation requirements, coding standards as applied to medical record documentation and compliance requirements.  Demonstrates working knowledge of MS and APR DRG’s and intensity of service criteria.

Improves the overall quality and completeness of clinical documentation through the application of evidence-based knowledge, analysis, in-depth review, interpretation, identification of opportunities, communication and consistent follow-up and evaluation of concurrent and retrospective (as required)  medical record documentation. 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

RHIA, RHIA, CCS or RN.   Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-10. 

 

Minimum Work Experience

 Two or more years CDI and coding experience in a health related setting. Good working knowledge of ICD-10.  Two or more years  of management experience.  Must have good working knowledge of ICD-10.  Must have strong computer, verbal and written communication skills.  Proficient in public speaking, presentation and educational activities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Is self-directed and able to manage the CDI Department to ensure appropriate and effective reimbursement

Establishes and monitors employee workflows, productivity and quality

Develops and monitors internal key indicator metrics associated with CDI as it relates to the revenue cycle and quality outcomes.  Maintains goals related to CDI goals.  Proactively review clinical documentation.  Assures evidence based  practices by creating an environment that encourages the use of research and vision in developing and improving operational processes. 

Develops, implements and maintains formal and informal educations programs, including creating the CDI orientation program, related to documentation improvement opportunities, coding and reimbursement issues, as well as performance improvement methodologies.  Analyzes and compiles accurate and complete data for statistical reporting and educational presentations, as needed.

Facilitates consistent, accurate, optimal documentation by providing both formal and informal educational programs

Participates as a member of work groups related to clinical documentation, utilization and compliance, if required.

Establishes cooperative and multidisciplinary relationships with Providers, coding staff and other health team members.

Performs concurrent and retrospective reviews of the medical record as needed, utilizing evidence-based knowledge, protocols and criteria. 

Reviews queries generated by the Clinical Documentation Improvement staff and Coding Specialists for completeness, accuracy and appropriate severity for purposes of appropriate coding and reimbursement.

Discuss issues related to documentation and Provider responses to Director of HIM.
