Provides leadership and administration within a college or school, in accordance with established guidelines, university policy and/or governmental regulations.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Leads the PLFSOM Office of Student Affairs in accordance with university policies, governmental regulations, and institutional accreditation requirements to ensure student affairs programs align with the mission and strategic priorities of TTUHSC El Paso’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine
  • Supervises the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and oversees the staff and budget of the Office of Student Affairs to implement programs that promote medical student academic progress, to include student counseling, career advising, mentoring, professionalism and student wellness
  • Cultivates collaborative relationships with medical students, faculty, staff, college masters, associate/assistant deans, and senior leaders to foster a positive, equitable and inclusive learning environment
  • Provides leadership in the development of policies and procedures; maintains the PLFSOM student handbook and student affairs website with current resources
  • Supports the Student Affairs Committee, Student Grading and Promotions Committee, Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee, and serves on committees as requested by dean
  • Oversees the planning and execution of medical student events including student orientation, white coat ceremony, match day, and commencement, and provides support for student government/student organizations and other student extracurricular activities
  • Oversees academic affiliation agreements for all student engagements
  • Produces Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) and supports student residency applications through ERAS and the NRMP
  • Administers the visiting student application process (VSAS/VSLO) and oversees capacity determinations, student assignments, and credentialing processes
  • Participates in teaching, clinical service, scholarly activity (particularly in scholarship related to student affairs), and academically-related public service with a goal of working towards academic promotion as a faculty member
  • This position will be a 1.0 FTE with the majority of time dedicated to the Office of Student Affairs and the remainder of time dedicated to a faculty appointment in the selected candidate's discipline
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with PLFSOM’s Declaration of Faculty Professional  Responsibility

  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with faculty, administrators, students, and members of the community
  • Experience in the management of student support programs
  • Demonstrated skills in organizational administrative functions, including financial/budgetary and personnel management skills
  • Training or experience in applying relational practice and relational leadership frameworks in student mentoring, advising, supervising and outreach to foster a professional growth-oriented learning community
  • Demonstrated success in applying the helping competencies for efficacious practice in student affairs, including but not limited to active listening and communication skills, crisis management skills, discernment, and the use of appropriate referrals
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a culturally competent professional with broad experience interacting with and supporting the needs of a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing complex organizational processes and making data-driven decisions

Required Qualifications
  • For physician candidates: M.D./D.O. degree, eligibility for an unrestricted Texas medical license prior to start date, and board certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties board
  • For non-physicians: Ph.D. or equivalent in biomedical sciences and successful completion of postdoctoral training in a relevant field of biomedical sciences
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Qualifications for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor rank or higher
  • Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in undergraduate medical education at the level of an assistant/associate dean, course director, clerkship director, learning community director, or academic advisor for medical students
