  • Overview

    The VP Associate Counsel - GM Financial is responsible for supporting operational business units within a large captive automobile finance company; handling complex legal matters or projects; and managing defensive litigation.

    Responsibilities

    JOB DUTIES

    • Research and analyze legal issues
    • Perform 50 state reviews
    • Monitor changes to applicable laws and regulations and communicate effectively to the appropriate business units
    • Select and monitor outside counsel
    • Contract review
    • Provide legal counsel and guidance to officers and directors
    • Assist with CFPB and other regulatory preparedness
    • Interact with state and federal regulators
    • Review policies and procedures
    • Manage defensive litigation
    • Coordinate the registration, renewal and protection of licenses, permits and related authorizations
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    • Conform with all corporate policies and procedures

    Qualifications

    Knowledge

    • Strong familiarity with consumer financial services laws and regulations
    • Understanding of the licensing and regulatory oversight of an automobile finance company
    • Experience with financial services litigation and regulatory investigations

    Skills

    • Ability to perform 50 state reviews
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents
    • Ability to express facts and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment
    • Analytical ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw the correct conclusions
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with others
    • Ability to partner with other teams
    • Must be able to work independently and use computerized research tools

    Additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    • Licensed to practice law in good standing

    Education

    • Master’s Degree ?Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required

    Experience

    • 4-8 years experience as an attorney providing consumer financial services legal and regulatory advice (with some portion of that time advising automobile finance lenders) required
