Position Summary:

Under the direction of the California Public Policy Director, the Senior Manager, Public Policy and Advocacy, is responsible for leading staff, volunteers and activities to implement the nationwide strategic plan for Public Policy. The Senior Manager is responsible for recruiting, engaging, training and supporting volunteer leaders in grassroots strategies and tactics. This role serves as a key member of the state and national public policy leadership team, working in close collaboration with the California State Policy Office and the Washington, D.C. Federal Affairs office. As a Senior Manager, this position represents the Alzheimer’s Association on external coalitions, stakeholder groups and local committees.

This position will work within the Southern California region (from the Santa Barbara area south) and can be based at the Chapter in LA, Orange County or San Diego.


Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the Alzheimer’s Association’s national strategic plan and all metrics related to state and federal public policy and advocacy.

Supervise and support region public policy managers.

Provide leadership for region staff and volunteers in order to build and strengthen the year-round advocacy program influencing the US Senate, US Congress, California State Legislature and local elected officials.

Assess region and chapter volunteer capacity and recommend strategies and tactics to further develop and diversify the team of registered Southern California advocates.

Articulate and deliver a regional/chapter strategy to recruit, onboard, train and develop volunteer leaders working year-round with local, state and federal officials.

Manage an assigned portfolio of volunteer Ambassadors, Alzheimer’s Congressional Team (ACT) members and Alzheimer’s State Champions (ASCs).

Build and maintain relationships with local, state and federal elected/appointed officials.

Lead region’s volunteer Public Policy Committee and provide staff support to chapter boards of directors and policy committees.

Develop and implement a regional public policy and advocacy strategy and staff/volunteer model in support of the region’s 25 Walks to End Alzheimer’s.
Oversee region and chapter participation in local, state and federal public policy and advocacy activities

Engage in chapter, regional, state and federal public policy and advocacy activities in close collaboration with California State Policy Office staff and Washington, DC Federal Affairs team.

Manage advocacy databases to ensure accuracy and timely completion of reporting.

Lead region-wide and chapter-specific calls to mobilize grassroots action utilizing digital activation tools, including Phone2Action.

Coordinate external facing communication with elected and appointed officials.

Track and report activities to ensure compliance with federal and state lobbying laws.

Represent the Alzheimer’s Association at local, regional and statewide coalition/stakeholder meetings, including meetings organized by government.

Present at conferences, community events and educational programs to inform public policy and engage individuals and organizations in Alzheimer’s advocacy.

Collaborate with Alzheimer’s Association staff and identify partnership opportunities to advance the full organization mission in the areas of: Care and Support, Communications, Diversity and Inclusion, Fund Development, and Research.

Strengthen diversity and enhance inclusion among Region 3 volunteer advocates; seek opportunities to engage with under-represented, under-served and under-recognized communities.


Bachelors’ Degree in political science, public health, gerontology or related field. Masters’ degree in a related field preferred

A minimum of five years of experience in public policy or advocacy, preferably with non-profit organizations

A minimum of three years of direct experience managing or supervising personnel and budgets

Experience using common social media channels

Experience in community organizing and/or volunteer management

Demonstrated interest in aging, health, human services or dementia-related policy issues

Working knowledge of state and federal legislative process

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to speak publicly, provide legislative testimony, speak with elected officials and present to large audiences

Ability to work e?ectively with diverse populations with a high level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative

Ability to self-start, multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines

Ability to work with attention to detail and accuracy

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to use other software and databases

Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties throughout Southern California and nationally, as needed

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

Access to a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
