Characteristicsof Position:

This is agraduate student practicum, internship, or field placement in a clinicalposition in a human services agency providing alcohol, drug abuse, mentalhealth or juvenile justice services. Therapist Interns provideappropriate assessment, therapy and documentation, working under supervision ofthe assigned field instructor or designee.

  • Application to Practice - Effectively matches client needs to appropriatelevels and modalities of care; individualizes strategies and interventions toindividual client recovery needs, preferences, readiness, stage of change andunique co-occurring disorder, language, gender and cultural considerations;makes optimum therapeutic use of client crises; incorporates and utilizespharmaceutic interventions as appropriate; adheres to the fidelity of selectedpractice models.

  • Professional Readiness - Understands and respects diverse culturesand cultural differences; comfortable with and responds to persons withdisabilities; evidences personal awareness of strengths, limitations andbiases; behaves ethically and adheres to professional standards ofconduct; pursues guidance and supervision and continuous professionaldevelopment opportunities; remains aware of personal and professional limits inknowledge and expertise.

  • Technical Capabilities - Proficient in the use of Electronic Health Records;effectively utilizes electronic medium (internet, intranet, phones, etc.) tocommunicate and stay abreast of changes in the field and political andcommunity environments; thoroughly documents and records professionalevents/activities.

  • Business Acumen - Knowledgeable of support and benefits available to clients andaggressively works to enable client access to those resources; proficient inthe matching and billing of services provided to appropriate fund sources andmaintaining audit compliant backup documentation; consistently meets or exceedsestablished case load size and productivity standards.

  • Professional - Offerconsultative services and resources; offer collaboration with communityinstitutions and systems; offer techniques for interacting with communitysystems (e.g., courts, lawyers, schools); capable in methods of clinicalsupervision, clinical consultation, and clinical teaching; knowledgeable inSelf-assessment methodologies; adheres to professional values and codes ofethics.

Pre-requisiteRequirements:

  • Currentlyenrolled in a graduate degree program in social work, counseling, psychology orother human services field and working under a formal learning contract orsimilar agreement with a university.

Qualityof Work Expected: Level commensurate with satisfactory Therapist Intern performance

Quantityof Work Expected: Commensuratewith level necessary to fully meet obligations of learning contract.

Supervision: This position does not providesupervision to others, and reports to the assigned field instructor.

Scope ofResponsibilities:

Undersupervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, assess when admittingnew clients, provide clinical services, maintain and prepare clinical charts,professionally communicate with and provide consultations toparents/significant others.

CoreResponsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Workingunder supervision of the assigned field instructor or designee, adheres toregulatory bodies and licensing rules, guidelines and established protocols tocarry out duties as established in the learning contract or similar agreement,in compliance with contract, licensure, accreditation, and certificationrelative to the agency, program, service assignment and agency designated modelfor treating persons with co-occurring mental and substance disorders.

  • Provideclinical services including, but not limited to individual, group and familytherapy, assessments, treatment plans and reviews, and discharge planning.

  • Attendscheduled interdisciplinary treatment team meeting or clinical supervisorysessions and discusses aspects of client's care and progress (or lack of same);may participate in other meetings/events as assigned.

  • Observeclients for behavioral changes and progress in treatment, communicateempathically with clients regarding addiction, mental illness, medications andrecovery.

  • Conductsface to face interviews with clients to develop individual behavioral health ortreatment plans and reviews individual behavioral health treatment plans withassigned field instructor or designee.

  • Responsiblefor documenting services he/she directly provides.

  • Reportcrisis situations and treatment needs of clients to clinical personnel andsupervisor; recognize client's comprehensive needs and discusses withinterdisciplinary treatment team.
