Summary of Job Duties

The Homestake Operations Superintendent manages the day to day operation of the Homestake Water Project.  This position is based at the Otero Pump Station near Buena Vista, Colorado.  The Homestake system is vast and complex, consisting of multiple collection systems, Homestake Reservoir, the Otero Pump Station and over 50 miles of large diameter pipeline.  The Homestake Water Project is a joint venture between Colorado Springs Utilities and the City of Aurora.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • 24/7 Effective Operation of the Homestake System
  • Supervising a small team
  • Acting as the primary point of contact on all aspects of the System to management and the Homestake Steering Committee           
  • Developing and understanding budgets, and prioritization of projects, repairs and enhancements
  • Providing leadership by training and developing staff, creating succession plans, and enhancing accountability
  • Seeking out innovative solutions to complex problems related to pipeline inspection, repair and maintenance; Pump Station efficiency and reliability, and overall dam and collection system operation and maintenance
  • Formalizing operating procedures, line diagrams, and maintenance programs for the various components related to the Homestake System 

Additional information you should know about this opportunity:

  • This position is unique; there are 2 caretakers on-site at Otero Pump station, housing 2 Colorado Springs Utilities employees, with 1 being the role of Operations Superintendent 
  • 24/7 on-call coverage - split between these 2 caretakers/employees  
  • Employee/Family housing is provided by Colorado Springs Utilities 
  • We advocate for the family to be present on-site as well, as it makes for a less solitary environment; there is a school bus stop nearby for the schools in Buena Vista  
  • This is considered a remote work location, but in all actuality it is only 10 miles from the town of Buena Vista. 

What will it take to be successful? We are looking for candidates who have a familiarity with the Homestake System, or systems similar in size and/or scope.  Experience and knowledge in pipeline inspection techniques is very helpful.  Ideal candidate will have demonstrated relevant experience working with pipelines, dams, pump stations, and raw water collection systems.  Supervision and management experience is required.  This job will require the ability to work effectively with the two partner cities, and the members of the Homestake Steering Committee members.
